We’ve all heard about the benefits of red wine. Good for your heart. Good for your soul. And if you ask me, I’ve been the biggest proponent of this theory for years.
Then came resveratrol. An antioxidant found in grapes, quietly linked to anti-aging. And the internet lost its mind. Memes everywhere. “Drinking red wine makes you younger.” Scientists apparently confirmed it. Pour another glass, you’re basically doing skincare.
Wishful thinking. Trust me, I wanted it to be true too.
But here's the reality: drinking wine for resveratrol is like eating one blueberry and expecting to reverse aging. The amount you'd need to actually benefit, and the amount your body can absorb and use, are two completely different numbers. This gap between what's present and what's actually used? That's bioavailability. And it's the reason most skincare doesn't work the way it promises to."
Skincare works exactly the same way.
Just because something is listed on the label doesn’t mean your skin is actually receiving it. Doesn’t mean it survived the journey from the factory to your bathroom shelf. Doesn’t mean it can cross your skin barrier. Doesn’t mean the concentration is anything more than technically true.
This is what bioavailability means and it’s the conversation the skincare industry almost never wants to have.
Bioavailability.
Here’s the simplest way to put it: an ingredient can exist on a label and still be completely useless to your skin.
It might be too large to penetrate the skin barrier. It might have degraded before you even opened the bottle. It might need a specific pH to activate and the formula it’s in doesn’t provide that. Or it might just be present in a concentration that sounds impressive on marketing copy but doesn’t actually translate to anything meaningful once it’s on your face.
Presence and performance are two completely different things.
When a brand says “contains 15X Vitamin C,” they mean Vitamin C was incorporated into the formulation. That’s it.
Whether your skin can absorb it, use it, and whether it’s still intact by the time it reaches you that’s a separate conversation entirely. One they’re usually not having.
Why Don't Skincare Ingredients Actually Work?
Let’s talk about a few specific ways the most marketed ingredients fall short.
Collagen and elastin. They’re real, they matter. But here’s the thing: they’re large protein molecules. The skin barrier is selective about what it lets through, and these molecules are simply too big to cross it effectively. What you’re getting is surface-level hydration. Not structural collagen. Not elastin repair. Just a nice feeling until you rinse it off.
Vitamin C is a genuinely powerful antioxidant. It's one of the key ingredients your skin needs to build collagen. Does Vitamin C skincare actually work? Yes. but only under very specific conditions. The challenge is stability. The active form of Vitamin C degrades easily. The product that’s been sitting in your bathroom for three months, with the pump that lets a little air in every time you use it? The Vitamin C in that formula has been quietly oxidizing since you opened it.
It also needs a pH of around 2.5–3.5 to work. Most formulas don’t maintain that range. At neutral pH, it oxidizes and goes inactive.
Retinol is similarly sensitive. It breaks down with light exposure, pH changes, and air. If it’s packaged in a clear jar or bottle, it’s already losing potency just from your bathroom light.
And about those percentages: “20% active complex” sounds powerful. But the real question is: how much is still active when you apply it?
Higher concentration doesn’t mean higher performance. It often means higher irritation and no better results.

What Makes a Skincare Ingredient Bioavailable?
Bioavailability comes down to a few things.
- Molecular size and lipid affinity. Skincare ingredient absorption starts at the skin's outer layer which is made of fatty lipids that naturally favor oil-soluble ingredients. This is why vitamins A, D, E, K, carotenoids, and botanical oils tend to absorb well: their structure is recognizable to the skin. Water-soluble ingredients like Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid have to work harder to cross that barrier.
- Delivery systems matter. A good delivery system is worth more than a high concentration. The ingredient needs a vehicle, not just a label. The carrier protects the active until it reaches the right layer of skin, then releases it slowly. This is also why encapsulated ingredients tend to cause less irritation: they bypass the concentration shock at the surface.
- pH. Your skin has a natural protective surface: slightly acidic, like a shield it maintains all day. Most people don't know this exists until something disrupts it. The wrong formula does exactly that. Your skin starts reacting. Its not sensitive, it’s just doing its job.
- Freshness. Many actives don’t suddenly expire at a date stamped on the bottom of the bottle. They start degrading the moment they come into contact with air, light, or humidity which is usually when you first open the product. Potency is a gradual slide, not a cliff edge.

What Is Fresh Bioactive Skincare?
Early on, we made a decision: we would not formulate for maximum shelf life. We wouldn’t freeze a formula for years and call it stable.
We source in limited batches. We formulate in-house. Every decision comes back to the same question: are these clean skincare ingredients that your skin can actually recognize and use?"
Take rosehip oil. We use it unrefined, not because the refined version doesn't exist, but because processing strips the very compounds that make it useful. The vehicle is the whole ingredient, delivered as close to its natural state as possible.
Our formulas have a natural life cycle of 6 months versus the industry norm of 3 years. That's what fresh bioactive skincare actually means. Not a marketing term, but a formulation decision.We think of that as evidence of life, not failure.
How to Read a Skincare Label (What Actually Matters)
You don’t need to become a cosmetic chemist. But a few habits help:
Check the first five ingredients. Ask if they have biological function. Look for oil-soluble actives if skin absorption is the goal. Be skeptical of very high percentage claims. Notice if a product is packaged in a way that protects actives from air and light. Ask how long it’s been sitting on a shelf.
Most importantly: pay attention to how your skin actually responds over time. Not the feeling three minutes after applying something. Weeks out. Is your skin barrier stronger? Is your skin more resilient? That’s performance. Everything else is just presence.
